It’s late evening, time for me to finally go to sleep. I’m at my final thoughts before I drift off into dreamland. Suddenly, the phone rings. “I’ll get it”, I think to myself. Feeling half asleep, I stumble through my living room and pick up the handset off of its cradle. On the other end is one of my friends, who I’ll just refer to as “N”. He seems excited and tells me that he got a Prismatic Facet.
I’m not going to lie, but in this state of mind I initially thought it was a pretty sweet legendary engram drop. But what would make a legendary engram turn into a prismatic engram? After hanging up and drifting off to sleep, I awoke to find out.
where to take umbral engrams
Umbral engrams are an end game item that require you to be at least power level 240. The only way to obtain these is by purchasing them from Tess Everis after reaching the required light level, or decrypting five legendary engrams with a +5 boost .
From what we know, there are three different types of these prismatic items: weapon, armor and ghost. Of the armor and weapons shown in the image above – the ones with a star in their name (Prismatic Star) will give you the brightest engram colors; however they also have less stats than some of the other items on this list. The two pieces of gear I have highlighted at the top of this page (Destiny 2 Prismatic Recaster and Umbral Engrams) are the best items you can hope to decrypt from an umbral engram, just below these we see a weapon and armor which while not providing perfect rolls can still be good options.
What are Prismatic Recaster and Umbral Engrams in Destiny 2 ?
The Prismatic Recaster is a consumable which turns your five legendary weapons into prismatic weapons. The effect lasts for 30 minutes and can be activated from your vanguard quartermaster in the tower, or from your inventory screen by holding down on one of the items you wish to convert. It does not expire after this time period and allows you to carry the effects over into new activities.
The Umbral Engrams are a series of weapons that can be decrypted for you with your prismatic recaster at the end of the game, in exchange for some glimmer and legendary shards. They have their own unique perks but with only one stat roll on each item they are slightly weak when compared to non-prismatic weapons.
How to get Prismatic Recaster and Umbral Engrams in Destiny 2?
If you’re hoping to obtain these items, the only way currently is either through luck or via purchasing them from another player. The process involves decrypting five legendary engrams and having a +5 boost item in your inventory which you can obtain from ranking up with weekly milestones or boosting an alt account. You’ll then need to decrypt the five weapon engrams into an Umbral item, then convert them back to your liking into another set of umbral items. You can then repeat this process as much as you like (provided you’re willing to fork out the glimmer/shards) by converting them back and forth.
What are the benefits of using Prismatic Recaster and Umbral Engrams in Destiny 2?
The good thing about the recaster is that you don’t need to decrypt all five of your legendary engrams into umbral items in order to use it, this means you can carry the effect over into another activity. The downside is obviously doing 5x legendary engram runs which takes time and patience; but if you’re lucky with drops this can be an effective way of farming.
Conclusion
Prismatic recaster and umbral engrams are a new form of legendary engrams in Destiny 2. A prismatic item is received when you decrypt five legendaries into the same weapons class. You can then redeem these items at the tower with Tess Everis to receive a Prismatic Facet. This is done by holding down on one of your weapons, choosing the “infuse” option, and inserting the prismatic facet. This will turn it into a Prismatic item.
